VIETNAMICA

The Vietnamica project (ERC Advanced Grant, 2019-2024) brings together several researchers (professors, lecturers and postdoctoral researchers) from the École Pratique des Hautes Études, under the direction of Philippe Papin. Conducted in partnership with the Han-Nôm Studies Institute of Hanoi (Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences) and the University of Social Sciences and Humanities (Vietnam National University), it aims to analyze and process some 40,000 stampings that reproduce epigraphic inscriptions on the 25,000 donation steles in stone erected in Vietnamese villages from the 16th to the 20th century. These inscriptions, written in a local Chinese sprinkled with vernacular writings, open up new perspectives for writing a popular history of rural society through its beliefs and social structures. Thus, the Vietnamica project pursues two objectives: on the one hand, the global treatment of epigraphic inscriptions by the techniques related to numerical and computational humanities, on the other hand, the conduct of a research on the main theme of the inscriptions: the pious donations granted by ordinary people to village shrines.
Therefore, this research notebook is intended to present the important elements of the project as well as the events and publications resulting from the research of the members of the project.
